Day-1: Arrival in Ulaanbaatar. After transferring to a hotel, there will be some sightseeing around the town, visiting the Dinosaur Exhibition Hall of the Natural Historical Museum, and Gandan monastery. Dinner at the History Club restaurant offers to chance to hear a wonderful performance of pleasant melodies on the horse-headed violin (the morin khuur) and the famous Mongolian traditional vocal singing, called “Khoomii”. There will be an overnight stay in the hotel.(L,D)
Today we fly to the Gobi Desert in the morning and land at the “Bulagtai” local airport.
Our staff will welcome you at the airport and you will head off to Bayanzag (“Flaming Cliffs”), where US paleontologist Roy Chapman Andrews first found dinosaur eggs in the 1920’s. The visit to Bayanzag will furnish you with an opportunity to see pre-historical fossils, ever shifting sand dunes and majestic mountains. There will be an overnight stay in a tourist camp a foot away from the entrance of Yoliin Am. (B,L,D)
Yoliin Am (“Vulture gorge”) is one of the most picturesque natural reserves, where you will have the opportunity to see rare animals like wild sheep and ibexes. You can observe these animals in their natural habitat from a distance with the help of binoculars, and if we are lucky, the wild animals may cross our path.
The place is full of beautiful flowers and plants .We will drive through the Dungeree Gorge, a very narrow gorge with a small stream that only one car can pass through at a time. The gorge isn’t visited by many tourists, it is only known to local people. There will be an overnight stay at the Khongoriin Els sand dune that stretches for over 100km and is one of the biggest dunes in Mongolia.(B,L,D)
Today we will head north along the vast area of desert vegetation called saksual and across the “Arts Bogd” mountain of the Altai Mountain range. As we descend by car from the mountain, we will be welcomed by the ancient remnants of rock drawings that continue for over 3km. We camp at the remains of a monastery that was destroyed under the Stalinist purges.
The journey leads us to Khara Korum, the ancient capital city of the Mongolian Empire during the 13th century. Nearby you can marvel at the green and the red roofed temples of Erdene Zuu Monastery. It was the first Buddhist temple to be built in Mongolia and its name translates as "A Hundred Treasures". The monastery tells us the history of Mongolian religious culture during this ancient period.(B,L,D)
Amongst thick grassland, the Little Gobi desert, called Elsen Tasarkhai, stretching from south to west, will remind you of your journey to the Gobi desert. After a stop at the little desert drop, we will drive back to Ulaanbaatar. (B,L,D)
