Umnugobi Province

Umnugobi aimag is the south Gobi, the hottest and driest region of Mongolia, the least populated (47,3) and where water is most scarce. Umnugobi aimag covers an area of 165,400 square kilometers, and is the largest aimag in Mongolia. The administrative center is the town of Dalanzadgad, situated on the foot of Gurvan Saikhan Uul, at an altitude of 1,406 meters above sea level and 553 kilometers from Ulaanbaatar. The territory of the aimag belongs to the Desert Zone of the Gobi. The aimag has an exceptionally rich resource of anthracite coal.

Gobi – the Southern Mongolia
One of the most famous and exotic areas in the world, the Gobi Desert region has a history of adventurers and explorers. Known to be one of the harshest environments on the planet, with extreme temperature and seasonal changes, the Gobi is surprisingly full of wildlife, such as gazelle, wild ass or hulan, wild camel or havtgai, antelopes and the endangered Gobi dear or mazaalai. The Gobi Desert was the site of some of the most famous dinosaur fossil discoveries, including the world’s first dinosaur egg nests, some of which can be seen in Ulaanbaatar’s Natural History Museum. The majority of Mongolia’s population of Bactrian camels’ lives in this region and visitors can take a camel trek and see the Flaming Cliffs, the huge sand dunes of the Hongor Els or the remarkable gorge at Yolyn Am (Lammergier Valley).

Gobi Gurvan Saikhan
The mountain range of Gobi Gurvan Saikhan is a National Park, enjoying State protection. The National Park covers an area of 4,100 square kilometers and has enjoyed State protection since 1994.
The mountain range is composed of schist and sedimentary rocks of Palaeozoic age and consists of three spurs: Baruun, Dund and Zuun Saikhan, and extends for over 100 kilometers.

Canyon of Yolyn Am
Yolyn Am is the marrow canyon of a river which flows through Zuun Saikhan Uul (2,815 meters), 62 kilometers northwest of Dalanzadgad town. The gorge has sheer rock walls with a height of about 200 meters in the central park. It has been protected since 1965 and has an area of 70 square kilometers. Today it is a Strictly Protected Area. The rain which falls at the summit of the mountain flows down into the sheer canyon forming four waterfalls. It is enjoyable to watch the waterfalls streaming over the rim in winter. Only two people can pass in the narrowest part. Despite the sunshine, the place is quite dark. If you see the sky, it is only as a narrow blue line. Argali and Siberian Ibex are found in this place.

Noyon Uul
Noyon Uul is a dead volcano of the Gobi Altai Mountain Range. Its elevation is 2,403 meters above sea level. There is a famous cliff, which has a smooth external appearance, shining like a mirror from a distance, and thus was called mirror rock. Sliding processes during episodes of folding movement formed the cliff.

Huge sand dune and oasis
A sand dune named Khongor Els has an extraordinary length of 180 kilometers and 15-20 meters wide lies on the northern part of the mountains of Seree and Zuulen. The sound produced by masses of sand moving in the wind can be heard from afar. This is why the dunes have been given the name “The Singing Sands” or “Duut Manhan”. Near the Hongor Gol at the northern edge of the sand dunes is an oasis. The huge sand dune is part of the desert zone, which takes up 2.7% of the country’s territory.

Dinosaur skeletons and eggs
Bayan zag is international famous for dinosaur remains-complete dinosaur skeletons, eggs and hatchlings, of the Cretaceous Period. Dinosaurs discovered here include Protoceratops (‘first-horned dinosaur’), Oviraptor (‘egg-thief) and the heavity – armoured Pinancosaurus.
Dinosaur egg with a diameter of 10 to 15 centimeters was found here in Mongolia for the first time in the world.

Ruins minerals and mountains
Galbiin Gobi is located on the territory of Khanbogd Soum. In its northern part one can see the ruins of three monasteries built in the 17th century in which Noyon Khudagt Danzan Ravjaa put on his plays.

Khermentsav
It is big wild thyme with over 1000 meters high, 250 square km, and 100-200 meters deep and 10 km wide at the end of it. It is located on the north of the Gurvan Tes soum of Umnugobi.

Tugrugiin Shiree
It is a steep with around 30 meters high to the west of Bulgan soum. Dinosaur bone appears on the wall of it and the rare remain of parried egg in skeleton of young dinosaur kept was found.
